Outside laboratory supply channels, the peptide is sold as a research chemical, a category that carries no requirement to demonstrate purity, identity, or freedom from contamination. Because it is not an approved medicine, products labeled BPC-157 sit in a regulatory gap in many countries, and actual content may differ from the label. Sports organizations list it among prohibited substances, so its presence in an athlete's sample can produce a doping finding regardless of how the material was obtained.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide of fifteen amino acids, written as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, whose sequence matches part of a larger protein identified in human gastric juice. That parent protein was described in stomach-secretion research, and the fifteen-residue fragment was named body protection compound, which gives the peptide its common label. Material used in experiments is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than extracted from tissue. The reported molecular weight is about 1419 daltons, and the chain contains several proline residues, a feature that appears in discussions of its resistance to enzymatic breakdown.
Most published findings come from rodent models, where the peptide has been examined in wound-healing, gastrointestinal-lesion, tendon, and vascular-injury preparations. A smaller number of early human studies have been reported, chiefly in inflammatory bowel conditions, but the public record is short and has not led to marketing approval in the United States or the European Union. Reviewers therefore classify the compound as investigational, and whether animal results carry over to people remains an open question rather than a settled one.
Terminology in the literature is not fully standardised. Papers and product listings use BPC-157, BPC 157, and the longer phrase stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 interchangeably, and synonyms such as bepecin or PL 14736 appear in older or company-linked publications. Purity claims and reported masses can also differ between sources because peptide preparations may include counterions, residual solvents, or bound water. This variability complicates direct comparison of results across studies and makes the exact identity and grade of a given sample worth verifying. Discussions of the compound should therefore specify the source, salt form, and stated purity where those are known.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acid residues, with the sequence Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. Its name derives from body protection compound, a term used for a protein fraction identified in human gastric juice. Researchers in Zagreb first reported the pentadecapeptide in the early 1990s and described it as a stable fragment of that larger protein. The compound is also catalogued as PL 14736 and, in some commercial contexts, as bepecin. Its molecular formula is C62H98N16O22 and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 1419 daltons.

Published work on BPC-157 spans several decades and covers a wide range of experimental models. Much of the early literature reports outcomes in animal studies involving induced injury to the gastrointestinal tract, tendons, and other tissues. The volume of preclinical reports is large, while controlled human trials remain scarce. This imbalance is a recurring point of discussion, because animal findings do not automatically translate into human effects. Reviews often note that study designs differ substantially across laboratories.
Interest in the peptide has grown through online communities that discuss self-administered use, which sits outside formal research settings. Regulatory status varies by country, and in many jurisdictions the compound is not approved as a therapeutic product. Questions about optimal routes of administration, long-term effects, and dose-response relationships remain open. Published pharmacokinetic data in humans are limited, and much of what circulates in popular discussion is extrapolated from animal work rather than measured directly in people.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide built from fifteen amino acids, referred to in the literature as a pentadecapeptide. Its sequence was derived from a larger protein found in human gastric juice, commonly called body protection compound. Researchers first described the fragment in the early 1990s and named it after the parent protein plus a numeric identifier. The peptide does not correspond to a single marketed medicine; it is primarily a laboratory research material. Suppliers distribute it as a lyophilized powder intended for experimental use.
The sequence contains an unusually high proportion of proline and glycine, which limits regular secondary structure and contributes to solubility in aqueous media. The compound dissolves readily in water and in normal saline. Because it is a peptide, digestive enzymes are expected to break it down if it is swallowed, a consideration that influences the routes of administration used in animal experiments. Detailed conformational data remain limited, and published structural models are largely computational.
BPC 157 is a synthetic peptide built from fifteen amino acids. The letters stand for body protection compound, and the number is a laboratory code rather than a description of any biological feature. Its single-letter sequence is GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, which corresponds to a calculated mass near 1419.5 daltons. The material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis and is distributed as a lyophilized powder, not as a purified extract from a natural source.

==== Gallic acid biosynthesis ==== Gallic acid is formed from 3-dehydroshikimate by the action of the enzyme shikimate dehydrogenase to produce 3,5-didehydroshikimate. This latter compound spontaneously rearranges to gallic acid.
Repeated drug exposure changes how genes are switched on and off in the brain's reward circuits without altering the underlying DNA sequence, a set of processes known as epigenetic regulation. Three kinds of change have been implicated: chemical modification of the histone proteins around which DNA is wound, methylation of the DNA itself, and altered levels of small regulatory molecules called microRNAs. In rodents, some drug-induced epigenetic marks can be passed from parent to offspring and alter the offspring's response to the same drug, in some experiments reducing rather than increasing their drug taking. Neither the inheritance of these marks in humans nor their behavioral effects has been established.
=== Clinical outcomes === In clinical trials the outcome of different types of treatment is compared to identify if a compound or regimen is favourable for the patient. The choice of treatment in the conditioning therapy can have a profound impact on progression-free survival (PNS), overall survival (OS), relapse incidence (RI) and non-relapse mortality (NRM). The studies mentioned summarize key findings comparing various conditioning regimens. Studies on conditioning regimens for hematopoietic cell transplant in primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) have shown that thiotepa based therapies thiotepa/busulfan/cyclophosphamide (TBC) and thiotepa/carmustine (TT-BCNU) improve progression-free survival of PCNSL compared to traditional therapies carmustine/etoposide/cytarabine/melphalan (BEAM). Research also suggests that in BEAM if carmustine is exchanged for thiotepa no statistical difference was found in PFS, OS and RI. Furthermore, the capacity of thiotepa to pass the blood-brain barrier may allow optimizing the therapy for patients with Central Nervous System involvement of increased CNS relapse risk. Another study compared total body irradiation (TBI) and thiotepa, busulfan and cyclophosphamide/fludarabine (TTB) as a conditioning regimen of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia undergoing allogenic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. No statistical difference was found in the overall survival but the RI was higher in the TBI regimen but the NRM was lower with TTB suggesting that TBB might be a viable alternative to TBI.
After authorizing the Pentagon to use military force against Latin American drug cartels, the Trump administration doubled the reward for the capture of Maduro to US$50 million. At the time, an anonymous US official told Reuters that military action against those groups did not seem imminent; another official told Reuters that powers granted in the order included allowing the Navy to carry out sea operations including drug interdiction and targeted military raids. In August 2025, the US began deploying warships and personnel to the Caribbean, citing the need to combat drug cartels, although most of the fentanyl entering the US is over land via Mexico. On 20 August, Trump ordered three Navy warships to the coast of South America. As of 29 August, seven US warships, along with one nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, were in and around the Southern Caribbean, bringing along more than 4,500 sailors and marines. The Central Intelligence Agency joined the military campaign after confirming that it would play a significant role in combating drug cartels, just as it is considering using lethal force against these criminal organizations. In response to this tension in United States–Venezuela relations, Venezuela said it would mobilize more than four million soldiers in the Bolivarian Militia. On 26 August, Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López announced a naval deployment around Venezuela's main oil hub. Maduro said he "would constitutionally declare a republic in arms" if the country were attacked by the US forces deployed in the Caribbean.

== Research == Malonyllysine is chemically unstable and can decarboxylate to acetyllysine upon heating, which complicates its analysis and may lead to misidentification. In tandem mass spectrometry, this reaction is associated with a characteristic 44 Da loss corresponding to CO2 release. To overcome this, a stable tetrazole-based malonyllysine isostere was developed that resists such decomposition. It is compatible with peptide synthesis and shows reduced but detectable recognition by malonyl-specific antibodies and SIRT5, allowing studies of malonylation without decarboxylation artifacts.
Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a substance use disorder characterized by cravings for opioids, continued use despite physical or psychological deterioration, increased tolerance with use, and withdrawal symptoms after discontinuing opioids. Opioid withdrawal symptoms include nausea, muscle aches, diarrhea, trouble sleeping, agitation, and a low mood. Addiction and dependence are important components of opioid use disorder. Risk factors include a history of opioid misuse, current opioid misuse, young age, socioeconomic status, race, untreated psychiatric disorders, and environments that promote misuse (social, family, professional, etc.). Complications may include opioid overdose, suicide, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, and problems meeting social or professional responsibilities. Diagnosis may be based on criteria by the American Psychiatric Association in the DSM-5. Opioids include substances such as heroin, morphine, fentanyl, codeine, dihydrocodeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and tramadol. A useful standard for the relative strength of different opioids is morphine milligram equivalents (MME). It is recommended for clinicians to refer to daily MMEs when prescribing opioids to decrease the risk of misuse and adverse effects. Long-term opioid use occurs in about 4% of people following their use for trauma or surgery-related pain. In the United States, most heroin users begin by using prescription opioids that may also be bought illegally. People with opioid use disorder are often treated with opioid replacement therapy using methadone or buprenorphine.
== Later research == Reichelt published a number of papers concluding that autistic children excrete higher levels of peptides in their urine, as well as that such peptides may cause autistic gaze aversion; specifically, by interfering with corticothalamocortical processing of visual stimuli. As a result of this theory, others, particularly Panksepp, have speculated that opioid antagonists such as naloxone and naltrexone may be useful in the treatment of autism. In addition, Christopher Gillberg of the University of Gothenburg has published some studies showing that animals treated with opiates exhibit less clinging, in line with the behavior of autistic children, who, his research has also shown, "do not seem concerned when their parents are not near" and "exhibit less crying than infants without autism", and has also linked an excess of endogenous opioids to stereotypic (i.e. repetitive) behavior. However, more recently, two studies were published which failed to find a difference in levels of peptides in the urine of autistic children as opposed to those without autism. A 2009 review found that no evidence exists that urinary peptide levels are correlated with gut permeability.
=== Insects as a novel protein source for pet food === A challenge that is presented when feeding companion animals with food intolerance or sensitivities is finding protein sources that will not irritate their gastrointestinal tracts. Animal protein is a major cause of gastrointestinal problems, and insect protein may be an alternative source for these pets. Insects have the potential to be used as a novel protein in diets for sensitive animals. A novel protein is a protein source to which the animal has not previously been exposed. There are some risks to using novel protein sources, such as contaminants, antinutritional factors (ANFs), and allergens which are not well known. When referring specifically to dog and cat nutrition, the use of alternative protein sources must be able to deliver the ten essential amino acids (EAA) that are not synthesized from the body (including Arg, His, Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, Phe, Thr, Trp and Val). One additional amino acid which is specific to cats who are obligate carnivores by nature is taurine. This requirement is based on the low enzymatic action of cysteine dioxygenase and cysteine sulphinic acid decarboxylase within feline metabolism, where the competing pathway of pyruvate for an energy source overrides taurine synthesis. McCuster et al. created a study to identify amino acid composition of different insects, specifically addressing the presence of taurine in comparison to the National Research Council's (NRC) minimal requirements (MR) for the dog and cat.

Another reported method of radionuclide capture by metal-organic frameworks is through the incorporation of guest molecules. In this method, radionuclides are locked in the crystalline pores through first introducing the actinide cations into these pores and subsequent installation of additional or capping linkers. The central concept is that once the actinides are in the crystalline structure, additional linkers hinder the actinide cations and slow the leaching process from the crystal structure. Leeching from these capped frameworks has been reported to be on a similar order of magnitude as other materials used in radionuclide containment, such as perovskites, zeolites, and phosphate ceramics.
These mutations may enable the mutant organism to withstand particular environmental stresses better than wild type organisms, or reproduce more quickly. In these cases a mutation will tend to become more common in a population through natural selection. Viruses that use RNA as their genetic material have rapid mutation rates, which can be an advantage, since these viruses thereby evolve rapidly, and thus evade the immune system defensive responses. In large populations of asexually reproducing organisms, for example, E. coli, multiple beneficial mutations may co-occur. This phenomenon is called clonal interference and causes competition among the mutations.
== Detector == Often the detector is a simple Faraday plate coupled to a transimpedance amplifier, however, more advanced ion mobility instruments are coupled with mass spectrometers in order to obtain both size and mass information simultaneously. It is noteworthy that the detector influences the optimum operating conditions for the ion mobility experiment.
Beta thymosins are a family of proteins which have in common a sequence of about 40 amino acids similar to the small protein thymosin β4. They are found almost exclusively in multicellular animals. Thymosin β4 was originally obtained from the thymus in company with several other small proteins which although named collectively "thymosins" are now known to be structurally and genetically unrelated and present in many different animal tissues.
==== Promethazine ==== Promethazine is one of the recommended drugs by NASA to treat space motion sickness and studies have been conducted to analyze their pharmacological responses in outer space. Studies on promethazine were performed exclusively on Earth, called earthbound models, stimulating microgravity and weightlessness through forty-eight hours of bed rest. The −6° head-down best rest model, where individuals are placed lying 6 degrees down to study weightlessness. This type of model simulates the shift in fluid from the bottom to the top of the body, as well as bone loss, found in astronauts in weightless environments. Using twelve volunteers, 50 mg of promethazine was delivered orally or intramuscularly to the deltoid muscle before and after forty-eight hours of bedrest. Blood was examined at intervals of 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 24, 36, and 48 hours post-drug deliverance and promethazine levels were detected using plasma promethazine assays, which uses liquid chromatography to quantify promethazine kinetics. The study determined that higher concentrations of promethazine were found in the blood through oral delivery and bioavailability factors was impacted through weightlessness.

It is not approved for human use in the United States or the European Union. Clinical material has been studied in a small number of early trials, mainly for inflammatory bowel conditions, and the compound remains investigational. Regulators treat marketed products as unapproved rather than as authorized drugs.
The peptide was named after a protein fraction found in human gastric juice, and the shorter form was called body protection compound. That phrase was shortened to the abbreviation BPC. The number 157 refers to a laboratory designation used in the original isolation work.
Its sequence corresponds to a segment of a protein present in gastric secretions, but the material supplied for research is made synthetically. No commercial product is purified from human or animal tissue. The synthetic route is used because it gives a defined chain length and a reproducible sequence.
BPC-157 is a synthetic fifteen-amino-acid peptide whose sequence corresponds to a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice. It is studied mainly in preclinical research and is not an approved pharmaceutical product in major markets. Materials sold for laboratory use are typically labelled as research chemicals.
