Terminology in the literature is not fully standardised. Papers and product listings use BPC-157, BPC 157, and the longer phrase stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 interchangeably, and synonyms such as bepecin or PL 14736 appear in older or company-linked publications. Purity claims and reported masses can also differ between sources because peptide preparations may include counterions, residual solvents, or bound water. This variability complicates direct comparison of results across studies and makes the exact identity and grade of a given sample worth verifying. Discussions of the compound should therefore specify the source, salt form, and stated purity where those are known.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acid residues, with the sequence Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. Its name derives from body protection compound, a term used for a protein fraction identified in human gastric juice. Researchers in Zagreb first reported the pentadecapeptide in the early 1990s and described it as a stable fragment of that larger protein. The compound is also catalogued as PL 14736 and, in some commercial contexts, as bepecin. Its molecular formula is C62H98N16O22 and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 1419 daltons.
Most published work on BPC-157 consists of preclinical studies, including rodent models of tissue injury, gastrointestinal lesions, and vascular or tendon damage, together with in vitro cell assays. Reviews frequently note that the mechanisms proposed in these papers remain incompletely characterised and that findings have not been confirmed in large randomised human trials. The compound is widely sold as a research chemical rather than a licensed medicine, and labels commonly carry a statement that it is not for human use. Whether any of the reported animal effects translate to humans is an open question rather than an established result.
Analytical results depend on the column, gradient, and detector wavelength chosen by the laboratory, so purity values from different sources are not always directly comparable. Water content, counterion form, and residual trifluoroacetate affect both mass and purity calculations. Microbiological and endotoxin testing are separate from chemical purity and are not covered by a standard chromatographic run. Buyers evaluating a material typically request the full method description rather than a single purity figure.
Lyophilized peptide powder is generally stored at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower and kept away from light and moisture. Under these conditions degradation is slow, and sealed vials remain stable for extended periods. Once dissolved, the material is less stable, particularly in aqueous buffers near neutral pH, where hydrolysis and oxidation proceed faster. Solutions are usually kept cold and used within days to weeks. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they encourage aggregation.

Doses in the literature are usually expressed in micrograms or nanograms per kilogram of body weight. Investigators have administered the peptide by several routes, including injection and oral delivery, depending on the question asked. Route and dose vary widely across studies, which complicates direct comparison of results. Many papers report effects at low doses, but the absence of a standardized protocol limits generalization. Reporting practice differs between research groups.
Some properties, such as the peptide's sequence and molecular mass, are firmly established. Other claims, particularly about mechanism and clinical benefit, remain open questions. Proposed mechanisms include effects on nitric oxide signaling and on cell migration, but these are hypotheses supported by limited evidence. Reviewers often note that the field lacks large controlled human trials. Positive animal findings are best treated as signals for further study rather than as settled conclusions.
Most published studies examine BPC-157 in animal models rather than in humans. Common subjects include rats and mice, and researchers often use models of tissue injury, surgery, or induced inflammation. Reported endpoints include healing rates, blood vessel formation, and markers of tissue repair. These designs provide controlled comparisons, but findings in animals do not automatically transfer to people. Human clinical data remain limited and are frequently described as preliminary.
Peptides are susceptible to hydrolysis, oxidation, and aggregation, and BPC-157 is no exception. The lyophilized powder form is generally more stable than a solution because residual moisture is low and molecular mobility is reduced. Once dissolved, the peptide is exposed to water, oxygen, and trace metal ions that accelerate degradation. Light exposure and repeated freeze-thaw cycles are also commonly cited as sources of loss. These general principles guide most handling recommendations found in supplier documentation.
Standard practice for the solid form is storage at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, kept dry and away from light. Containers are usually sealed with a desiccant to limit moisture uptake. Reconstituted solutions are typically held at two to eight degrees Celsius and used within a short window, because potency can decline over days to weeks depending on the buffer and concentration. Freezing an already dissolved sample may help, though repeated thawing is discouraged. Specific shelf-life claims vary between suppliers and are rarely supported by published stability studies.
Protamine sulfate replaced hexadimethrine bromide (Polybrene), another cationic agent that was the original heparin reversal agent in the early days of heart surgery, until studies in the 1960s suggested that hexadimethrine bromide might cause kidney failure when used in doses in excess of its therapeutic range.
=== Heredity === Hyperandrogenism can appear as a symptom of many different genetic and medical conditions. Some of the conditions with hyperandrogenic symptoms, including PMOS, may sometimes be hereditary. Additionally, it is thought that epigenetics may contribute to the pathogenesis of polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. One potential cause of PMOS is maternal hyperandrogenism, whereby hormonal irregularities in the mother can affect the development of the child during gestation, resulting in the passing of polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome from mother to child. However, no androgen elevations were found in the umbilical cord blood of children born to mothers with PMOS.

=== Sulfate reduction === Sulfate reduction predominantly takes place in the leaf chloroplasts. The reduction of sulfate to sulfide occurs in three steps beginning with its conversion to adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (APS). This first step is catalyzed by ATP sulfurylase. The affinity of this enzyme for sulfate is low (Km approximately 1 mM), and the in situ sulfate concentration in the chloroplast is most likely one of the limiting/regulatory steps in sulfur reduction. Subsequently, APS is reduced to sulfite, catalyzed by APS reductase. Glutathione is the proposed reductant. The latter reaction is assumed to be one of the primary regulation points in the sulfate reduction, since the activity of APS reductase is the lowest of the enzymes of the sulfate reduction pathway and it has a fast turnover rate. Sulfite is with high affinity reduced by sulfite reductase to sulfide with ferredoxin as a reductant. The remaining sulfate in plant tissue is transferred into the vacuole. The remobilization and redistribution of the vacuolar sulfate reserves appear to be rather slow and sulfur-deficient plants may still contain detectable levels of sulfate.
Many people with MCT8 deficiency experience a range of debilitating effects, including the inability to walk or sit independently, absent or severely limited speech, intellectual disability, feeding difficulties and chronic stress on the heart and metabolism.

In the 2011–12 season, a coaching change by appointing Christian Streich, with the club finishing 12th. Under Christian Streich, the 2012–13 Bundesliga season saw the club finish in fifth place, their best league standing since 1994–95. The fifth-place finish secured a position in the 2013–14 UEFA Europa League. Had Freiburg defeated Schalke 04 on the final matchday of the season, Freiburg would have advanced further in the league table against Schalke and qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in club history. The 1–2 defeat to Schalke, however, saw Schalke secure fourth place in the league and qualify for the tournament instead. During the 2012–13 season, Freiburg also advanced to the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal for the first time in the club's history, but lost to local rivals VfB Stuttgart 1–2, and missed the chance to play Bayern Munich in the final. In the 2014–15 season, after six years in the top flight, Freiburg was relegated to the 2. Bundesliga by a single point after a final-day defeat at Hannover 96. This was despite beating Bayern Munich in the second-last game. In the following season, however, the club earned its fifth promotion to the Bundesliga, with two matches to spare. The first season back in the Bundesliga saw them end seventh. This saw Freiburg qualify for the Europa League, as German cupwinners Borussia Dortmund were already qualified for the Champions League. The side were eliminated in the third qualification round against NK Domžale from Slovenia. Freiburg stayed in the top flight, finishing 15th.
In 2019, senior executives from A&W, presenting at a conference organized by LabourWatch, were recorded sharing the anti-union measures that the franchisor allegedly takes when made aware of potential unionization activity at any franchisee or corporate-owned locations. Nancy Wuttunee, the Vice President, People Potential and Mike Atkinson, then-Regional Vice President, Eastern Canada, divulged that A&W's Home Office keeps a "'watch list' of franchises that are 'high risk for unionizing'" and that, when alerted of potential unionization efforts, Wuttunee described that the company has a “fire drill” reaction, which is "a rapid-response 'crisis management process' for responding to things that 'worry us.'" News of the presentation was released by PressProgress (a left-wing news site launched by the Broadbent Institute, a social democratic think tank in Canada). Some local politicians in Toronto, where the conference took place, criticized the company and its executives' remarks, including Toronto City Councillor Gord Perks who tweeted "Hey [A&W Canada], I'm never buying from you again, and I will tell as many people as I can to avoid you too. Canadians have a constitutional right to bargain collectively. Leave Canada." A&W continues to grow its number of locations within the province of Ontario and Atkinson is now the dedicated Vice President, Ontario.
== Cheese production == L. lactis subsp. lactis (formerly Streptococcus lactis) is used in the early stages for the production of many cheeses, including brie, camembert, Cheddar, Colby, Gruyère, Parmesan, and Roquefort. The use of L. lactis in dairy factories is not without issues. Bacteriophages specific to L. lactis cause significant economic losses each year by preventing the bacteria from fully metabolizing the milk substrate. Several epidemiologic studies showed the phages mainly responsible for these losses are from the species 936, c2, and P335 (all from the family Siphoviridae). The state Assembly of Wisconsin, also the number one cheese-producing state in the United States, voted in 2010 to name this bacterium as the official state microbe; it would have been the first and only such designation by a state legislature in the nation, however the legislation was not adopted by the Senate. The legislation was introduced in November 2009 as Assembly Bill 556 by Representatives Hebl, Vruwink, Williams, Pasch, Danou, and Fields; it was cosponsored by Senator Taylor. The bill passed the Assembly on May 15, 2010, and was dropped by the Senate on April 28.

=== Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder === One in four people who have a substance use disorder also have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, which makes the treatment of both conditions more difficult. ADHD is associated with an increased craving for drugs. Having ADHD makes it more likely that an individual will initiate substance misuse at a younger age than their peers. They are also more likely to experience poorer outcomes, such as longer time to remission, and to have increased psychiatric complications from substance misuse. While generally stimulant medications do not seem to worsen substance use, they are known to be non-medically used in some cases. Psychosocial therapy and/or nonstimulant medications and extended release stimulants are ADHD treatment options that reduce these risks.

BPC-157 is a synthetic fifteen-amino-acid peptide whose sequence corresponds to a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice. It is studied mainly in preclinical research and is not an approved pharmaceutical product in major markets. Materials sold for laboratory use are typically labelled as research chemicals.
No medicines regulator in the United States or the European Union has approved BPC-157 as a therapeutic product. Presenting it as a drug or as a dietary supplement ingredient would generally not match its regulatory status. Availability as a research chemical does not imply clinical approval.
Published reports rest largely on animal models and cell culture rather than controlled human trials. Review articles describe the proposed mechanisms as incompletely understood. Conclusions about effects in humans therefore remain tentative.
Bacteriostatic water or sterile saline is commonly used to dissolve the powder. The choice of solvent affects stability and preservation. Aqueous solutions are kept refrigerated and are not intended for long-term storage.
