animal model raises a handful of sensible questions. This page answers them in order, starting with the fundamentals and moving to applications.

Peptides are susceptible to hydrolysis, oxidation, and aggregation, and BPC-157 is no exception. The lyophilized powder form is generally more stable than a solution because residual moisture is low and molecular mobility is reduced. Once dissolved, the peptide is exposed to water, oxygen, and trace metal ions that accelerate degradation. Light exposure and repeated freeze-thaw cycles are also commonly cited as sources of loss. These general principles guide most handling recommendations found in supplier documentation.
Standard practice for the solid form is storage at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, kept dry and away from light. Containers are usually sealed with a desiccant to limit moisture uptake. Reconstituted solutions are typically held at two to eight degrees Celsius and used within a short window, because potency can decline over days to weeks depending on the buffer and concentration. Freezing an already dissolved sample may help, though repeated thawing is discouraged. Specific shelf-life claims vary between suppliers and are rarely supported by published stability studies.
Most published work on BPC-157 comes from animal experiments rather than controlled human trials. Rodent models have examined its effects on gastrointestinal lesions, tendon and ligament injury, and blood vessel formation. These studies are often small and originate from a limited number of research groups, which affects how broadly the findings can be generalized. No large randomized human trial has been reported in the peer-reviewed literature. Discussion of the compound therefore rests largely on preclinical data, and questions about its effects in people remain open rather than settled.
Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the activity observed in animal models. The most frequently cited involve signaling through vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and modulation of the nitric oxide system. Researchers have also described interactions with protective pathways in the gut lining. These proposed mechanisms appear in the literature as hypotheses supported by preclinical observations, not as confirmed pathways in humans. The precise way the peptide produces its reported effects, and whether those effects carry across species, remain areas of active and unresolved investigation.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide, meaning it consists of fifteen amino acids joined in a single chain. Its sequence is Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val, a fragment corresponding to part of a larger protein found in human gastric juice. The peptide was first described in the 1990s by researchers in Zagreb who were studying gastric protective factors. It is not a naturally circulating hormone; it is a laboratory-made fragment derived from a stomach protein. The name is an abbreviation of body protection compound, with the number referring to the fragment's position in the source protein.

Published studies on BPC-157 are dominated by animal models. Commonly used endpoints include healing of surgically induced lesions in the stomach, tendon-to-bone attachment after transection, and recovery from experimentally induced vascular or intestinal damage. Many of these reports come from a small number of research groups, and the peptide is often described as acting across a wide range of tissue types. That breadth is itself a point of discussion, since one molecule influencing many unrelated systems is unusual.
Human data are far more limited than animal data. A small number of clinical reports exist, generally with few participants and without the randomization or blinding expected in later-phase trials. No large, independently replicated human trial has appeared in the indexed peer-reviewed literature. Statements about effects in people therefore rest on extrapolation from animal work rather than on direct evidence, and the strength of that extrapolation remains an open question rather than a settled matter.
Proposed mechanisms include interaction with the nitric oxide system, modulation of growth factor signaling, and effects on blood vessel formation. None of these has been established as the primary mode of action, and some proposed pathways rest on indirect measurements. Whether the reported effects depend on a specific receptor has not been determined. Stability in gastric acid, unusual for a peptide of this size, is also reported in animal work, but the reason for it is not firmly established.
Most early work on this peptide originated in the 1990s from a research group in Zagreb, Croatia, relying on animal models and cell cultures. Reported observations included effects on gastrointestinal lesion healing, tendon fibroblast migration, and blood vessel formation under controlled laboratory conditions. These findings come predominantly from rodent studies and in vitro assays rather than from human trials. Controlled human data remain limited, and the degree to which animal results translate to human physiology is an open question rather than a settled fact.
Within the research literature, the peptide is discussed through several provisional mechanisms, including cytoprotection, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interaction with the nitric oxide system. None of these mechanisms is fully characterized, and no single pathway is universally accepted. Review articles typically note the gap between consistent animal findings and sparse human evidence. The compound is classified as a research chemical rather than an approved pharmaceutical, which shapes how studies are designed, funded, and reported.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide with the sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, corresponding to a partial fragment of a larger protein detected in human gastric juice. The name derives from the parent protein designation BPC, an abbreviation of body protection compound, with 157 acting as a fraction or batch identifier used by the original investigators. Its molecular weight is approximately 1419 daltons, and the chain contains no unusual residues or disulfide bridges. In the literature it is described as a short, water-soluble fragment rather than a complete natural protein.
BPC 157 is a synthetic peptide built from fifteen amino acids. The letters stand for body protection compound, and the number is a laboratory code rather than a description of any biological feature. Its single-letter sequence is GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, which corresponds to a calculated mass near 1419.5 daltons. The material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis and is distributed as a lyophilized powder, not as a purified extract from a natural source.
Early work on this family of molecules examined fractions of human gastric juice, where a larger protein was reported to protect gastrointestinal tissue in animal models. BPC 157 was designed as a shorter, more stable fragment of that protein and then studied on its own. The peptide itself is not a normal dietary component and is not present in the human body in meaningful quantities. Descriptions of its origin therefore refer to the research lineage of a laboratory molecule rather than to an endogenous or nutritional substance.
The sequence contains an unusually high proportion of proline and glycine, which limits regular secondary structure and contributes to solubility in aqueous media. The compound dissolves readily in water and in normal saline. Because it is a peptide, digestive enzymes are expected to break it down if it is swallowed, a consideration that influences the routes of administration used in animal experiments. Detailed conformational data remain limited, and published structural models are largely computational.
BPC-157 is normally distributed as a lyophilised powder that ranges from white to off-white in appearance. The peptide dissolves readily in water, normal saline, and common aqueous buffers, and it is poorly soluble in nonpolar solvents such as hexane or vegetable oils. Lyophilised vials take up moisture if left open, which changes the mass of powder in the container and complicates any later weighing. Because the material is handled in small quantities, static and adhesion to glass or plastic can also cause noticeable losses during transfer.
The main chemical liabilities of this sequence are peptide-bond hydrolysis and possible aspartate-related reactions, since the peptide contains aspartic acid residues but no cysteine, methionine, or tryptophan. Absence of those three residues removes the most common oxidation and disulfide pathways from consideration. Studies of related peptides indicate that aspartate isomerisation and aspartimide formation occur most readily at Asp-Gly and Asp-Ala positions, and open questions remain about how quickly those reactions proceed under ordinary laboratory conditions. Storage guidance typically emphasises cool, dry, dark conditions to slow hydrolysis.
Identity and purity are usually assessed with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often paired with mass spectrometry using electrospray or MALDI ionisation. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping by enzymatic digestion provide additional sequence-level confirmation. Purity is commonly reported as an area percentage from a chromatographic trace, and water content can be measured by Karl Fischer titration. Reported masses may differ by tens of daltons between sources because preparations can contain acetate or trifluoroacetate counterions, and such differences are not by themselves evidence of a different peptide.
=== Pharmacokinetics === The absorption of flutamide is complete upon oral ingestion. Food has no effect on the bioavailability of flutamide. Steady-state levels of hydroxyflutamide, the active form of flutamide, are achieved after 2 to 4 days administration. Levels of hydroxyflutamide are approximately 50-fold higher than those of flutamide at steady-state. The plasma protein binding of flutamide and hydroxyflutamide are high; 94 to 96% and 92 to 94%, respectively. Flutamide and its metabolite hydroxyflutamide are known to be transported by the multidrug resistance-associated protein 1 (MRP1; ABCC1). Flutamide is metabolized by CYP1A2 (via α-hydroxylation) in the liver during first-pass metabolism to its main metabolite hydroxyflutamide (which accounts for 23% of an oral dose of flutamide one hour post-ingestion), and to at least five other, minor metabolites. Flutamide has at least 10 inactive metabolites total, including 4-nitro-3-fluoro-methylaniline. Flutamide is excreted in various forms in the urine, the primary form being 2-amino-5-nitro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenol. Flutamide and hydroxyflutamide have elimination half-lives of 4.7 hours and 6 hours in adults, respectively. However, the half-life of hydroxyflutamide is extended to 8 hours after a single dose and to 9.6 hours at steady state) in elderly individuals. The elimination half-lives of flutamide and hydroxyflutamide are regarded as too short to allow for once-daily dosing, and for this reason, flutamide is instead administered three times daily at 8-hour intervals.
== Aging studies == A gradual increase in CD38 has been implicated in the decline of NAD+ with age. Treatment of old mice with a specific CD38 inhibitor, 78c, prevents age-related NAD+ decline. CD38 knockout mice have twice the levels of NAD+ and are resistant to age-associated NAD+ decline, with dramatically increased NAD+ levels in major organs (liver, muscle, brain, and heart). On the other hand, mice overexpressing CD38 exhibit reduced NAD+ and mitochondrial dysfunction. Macrophages are believed to be primarily responsible for the age-related increase in CD38 expression and NAD+ decline. Cellular senescence of macrophages increases CD38 expression. Macrophages accumulate in visceral fat and other tissues with age, leading to chronic inflammation. The inflammatory transcription factor NF-κB and CD38 are mutually activating. Secretions from senescent cells induce high levels of expression of CD38 on macrophages, which becomes the major cause of NAD+ depletion with age. Decline of NAD+ in the brain with age may be due to increased CD38 on astrocytes and microglia, leading to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration.

Chipotle's menu consists of five items: burritos, bowls, tacos, quesadillas, and salads. The price of each item is based on the choice of chicken, pork carnitas, barbacoa, steak, tofu-based "sofritas", or vegetarian (with guacamole or queso, which would be at an extra charge otherwise). Additional optional toppings are offered free of charge, including: rice, beans, four types of salsa, fajita vegetables, sour cream, cheese, and lettuce. Although Chipotle styles itself as a "Mexican Grill", its menu is more accurately characterized as Cal-Mex, a form of Mexican-American cuisine with its roots in California. When asked in 2007 about expanding the menu, Steve Ells said, "[I]t's important to keep the menu focused, because if you just do a few things, you can ensure that you do them better than anybody else." Chipotle also offers a children's menu. Some restaurants sell beer and margaritas in addition to soft drinks and fruit drinks. The majority of food is prepared in each restaurant. Some exceptions are the beans and carnitas, which are prepared at a central kitchen in Chicago, Illinois. None of the restaurants have freezers, microwave ovens, or can openers. The chain experimented with breakfast foods at two airports in the Washington (D.C.) metropolitan area but decided against expanding the menu in that direction. Starting in 2009, selected restaurants had offered a pozole soup, which has since been discontinued. Starting in 2009, Chipotle tested a vegan chicken product (made by Gardein) called "Garden Blend" in various cities but discontinued it in 2010.

This alternative method of methylation analysis also uses bisulfite-treated DNA but avoids the need to sequence the area of interest. Instead, primer pairs are designed themselves to be "methylated-specific" by including sequences complementing only unconverted 5-methylcytosines, or, on the converse, "unmethylated-specific", complementing thymines converted from unmethylated cytosines. Methylation is determined by the ability of the specific primer to achieve amplification. This method is particularly useful to interrogate CpG islands with possibly high methylation density, as increased numbers of CpG pairs in the primer increase the specificity of the assay. Placing the CpG pair at the 3'-end of the primer also improves the sensitivity. The initial report using MSP described sufficient sensitivity to detect methylation of 0.1% of alleles. In general, MSP and its related protocols are considered to be the most sensitive when interrogating the methylation status at a specific locus. The MethyLight method is based on MSP, but provides a quantitative analysis using quantitative PCR. Methylated-specific primers are used, and a methylated-specific fluorescence reporter probe is also used that anneals to the amplified region. In alternative fashion, the primers or probe can be designed without methylation specificity if discrimination is needed between the CpG pairs within the involved sequences. Quantitation is made in reference to a methylated reference DNA.
=== Gas treatment === Aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA), diglycolamine (DGA), diethanolamine (DEA), diisopropanolamine (DIPA) and methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) are widely used industrially for removing carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from natural gas and refinery process streams. They may also be used to remove CO2 from combustion gases and flue gases and may have potential for abatement of greenhouse gases. Related processes are known as sweetening.
If Gaddafi's Free Officers had not preempted the Shelhis, they would have almost certainly been defeated by the combined forces of Abdul Aziz Shelhi, the deputy commander of Libya's army, and the prominent families in Cyrenaica that supported the Shelhi family. On 1 September, Gaddafi's Free Officers occupied airports, police depots, radio stations, and government offices in Tripoli and Benghazi. Gaddafi took control of the Berka barracks in Benghazi, while Umar Muhayshi occupied Tripoli barracks and Jalloud seized the city's anti-aircraft batteries. Khweldi Hameidi took over the Tripoli radio station and arrested crown prince Sayyid Hasan ar-Rida al-Mahdi as-Sanussi, forcing him to relinquish his claim to the throne. They met no serious resistance and wielded little violence against the monarchists. Once Gaddafi removed the government, he announced the foundation of the Libyan Arab Republic. Addressing the populace by radio, he proclaimed an end to the "reactionary and corrupt" regime, "the stench of which has sickened and horrified us all". Due to the coup's bloodless nature, it was initially labelled the "White Revolution", although was later renamed the "One September Revolution" after its date. Gaddafi insisted that the Free Officers' coup represented a revolution, marking the start of widespread change in the socio-economic and political nature of Libya. He proclaimed that the revolution meant "freedom, socialism, and unity", and soon implemented measures to achieve this.

== Mechanisms == Evidence from physiological, pharmacological and neuroimaging studies suggest serotonin (also called 5-HT) may play a role in anorexia. While acutely ill, metabolic changes may produce a number of biological findings in people with anorexia that are not necessarily causative of the anorexic behavior. For example, abnormal hormonal responses to challenges with serotonergic agents have been observed during acute illness, but not recovery. Nevertheless, increased cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (a metabolite of serotonin), and changes in anorectic behavior in response to acute tryptophan depletion (tryptophan is a metabolic precursor to serotonin) support a role in anorexia. The activity of the 5-HT2A receptors has been reported to be lower in patients with anorexia in a number of cortical regions, evidenced by lower binding potential of this receptor as measured by PET or SPECT, independent of the state of illness. While these findings may be confounded by comorbid psychiatric disorders, taken as a whole they indicate serotonin in anorexia. These alterations in serotonin have been linked to traits characteristic of anorexia such as obsessiveness, anxiety, and appetite dysregulation. Neuroimaging studies investigating the functional connectivity between brain regions have observed a number of alterations in networks related to cognitive control, introspection, and sensory function. Alterations in networks related to the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex may be related to excessive cognitive control of eating related behaviors.
The new 4th district encompasses most of the counties in the eastern part of the Texoma region along the Red River, including the communities of Sherman and Paris, as well as some sections of the suburban and exurban DFW Metroplex including Frisco, most of Plano and the Collin County portion of Dallas. The incumbent is Republican Pat Fallon, who was re-elected with 68.4% of the vote in 2024. Donald Trump and Ted Cruz each respectively won 61.2% and 59.0% of the vote here in 2024.
Its smooth muscle is innervated by involuntary nerves (sympathetic nerves via the sympathetic trunk and parasympathetic nerves via the vagus nerve) and in addition voluntary nerves (lower motor neurons) which are carried in the vagus nerve to innervate its striated muscle. The esophagus may be affected by gastric reflux, cancer, prominent dilated blood vessels called varices that can bleed heavily, tears, constrictions, and disorders of motility. Diseases may cause difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), painful swallowing (odynophagia), chest pain, or cause no symptoms at all. Clinical investigations include X-rays when swallowing barium sulfate, endoscopy, and CT scans. Surgically, the esophagus is difficult to access in part due to its position between critical organs and directly between the sternum and spinal column.
=== Initial hospital management === The clinician must protect the patient against hypotension, kidney failure, acidosis, hyperkalemia and hypocalcemia. Admission to an intensive care unit, preferably one experienced in trauma medicine, may be appropriate; even well-seeming patients need observation. Open wounds should be treated as surgically appropriate, with debridement, antibiotics and tetanus toxoid; ice should be applied to injured areas. Breathing and circulation must be checked and the patient should be given oxygen if eligible. Oral or intravenous fluids must be given depending on the measured amounts of electrolytes, arterial blood gases, and muscle enzymes. Intravenous hydration of up to 1.5 L/h should continue to prevent hypotension. A urinary output of at least 300 mL/h should be maintained with IV fluids and mannitol, and hemodialysis considered if an increase in urine is not achieved. Intravenous sodium bicarbonate should be used to keep the urine pH at 6.5 or greater, to prevent myoglobin and uric acid deposition in kidneys. To prevent hyperkalemia/hypocalcemia, consider the following adult doses:
