The short version of gastric juice protein fits in a sentence. The long version — which is the one that helps — is below.
Reviewed 2026-04-21. Anything still debated is marked as such rather than presented as settled.
Most published findings come from rodent models, where the peptide has been examined in wound-healing, gastrointestinal-lesion, tendon, and vascular-injury preparations. A smaller number of early human studies have been reported, chiefly in inflammatory bowel conditions, but the public record is short and has not led to marketing approval in the United States or the European Union. Reviewers therefore classify the compound as investigational, and whether animal results carry over to people remains an open question rather than a settled one.
Outside laboratory supply channels, the peptide is sold as a research chemical, a category that carries no requirement to demonstrate purity, identity, or freedom from contamination. Because it is not an approved medicine, products labeled BPC-157 sit in a regulatory gap in many countries, and actual content may differ from the label. Sports organizations list it among prohibited substances, so its presence in an athlete's sample can produce a doping finding regardless of how the material was obtained.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide of fifteen amino acids, written as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, whose sequence matches part of a larger protein identified in human gastric juice. That parent protein was described in stomach-secretion research, and the fifteen-residue fragment was named body protection compound, which gives the peptide its common label. Material used in experiments is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than extracted from tissue. The reported molecular weight is about 1419 daltons, and the chain contains several proline residues, a feature that appears in discussions of its resistance to enzymatic breakdown.
Material of this kind is sold for laboratory research, and labels typically state that it is not intended for human or veterinary use. In many countries it is not an approved medicine, and sports antidoping rules place it among prohibited non-approved substances. Buyers commonly review a certificate of analysis, an independent test report, and the declared storage conditions. Batch-to-batch variation in purity and in counterion content is possible, and how much that variation affects experimental outcomes remains an open question.
Lyophilized peptide is normally kept at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, away from light and moisture. Powder held under those conditions is widely treated as stable for long periods, although published stability studies for this exact sequence are sparse and often come from suppliers rather than independent laboratories. Once dissolved, solutions are generally handled cold and used within a short window, because peptide bonds can hydrolyze over time. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are usually avoided to limit losses, and exact shelf-life figures depend on the buffer and the concentration involved.
Purity is ordinarily reported as a percentage from reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, where the area of the main peak is compared with the total peak area. Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry, since the measured mass can be checked against the value calculated from the sequence. Some certificates also include amino acid analysis or sequence confirmation by tandem mass spectrometry. A single purity number does not describe the profile of related impurities, so the underlying chromatogram and spectrum usually carry more information than the headline figure.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice | Sequence corresponds to a fifteen-residue portion of the parent protein |
| Sequence | GEPPPGKPADDAGLV | Single linear chain, fifteen amino acids |
| Reported molecular weight | About 1419 daltons | Value quoted consistently in supplier and review literature |
| Regulatory status | Not an approved human medicine in the US or EU | Handled and sold as a research chemical |
| Sports status | Listed as prohibited | Falls under non-approved-substance categories in anti-doping codes |
Analytical results depend on the column, gradient, and detector wavelength chosen by the laboratory, so purity values from different sources are not always directly comparable. Water content, counterion form, and residual trifluoroacetate affect both mass and purity calculations. Microbiological and endotoxin testing are separate from chemical purity and are not covered by a standard chromatographic run. Buyers evaluating a material typically request the full method description rather than a single purity figure.
Lyophilized peptide powder is generally stored at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower and kept away from light and moisture. Under these conditions degradation is slow, and sealed vials remain stable for extended periods. Once dissolved, the material is less stable, particularly in aqueous buffers near neutral pH, where hydrolysis and oxidation proceed faster. Solutions are usually kept cold and used within days to weeks. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they encourage aggregation.
Published storage guidance follows general peptide practice rather than product-specific studies. The dry powder is typically kept at minus 20 degrees Celsius, away from light and moisture. Once reconstituted, solutions are generally refrigerated and used over days to weeks, because the aqueous environment slowly promotes hydrolysis and oxidation. Long-term data on degradation rates or breakdown products are sparse. Stated shelf lives from different producers vary widely, reflecting the absence of a shared reference standard.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide built from fifteen amino acid residues. Its sequence comes from a larger protein fragment that researchers isolated from human gastric juice and described as a body protection compound. The fragment contains glycine, glutamic acid, five prolines, lysine, alanine, two aspartic acids, leucine, and valine. The number 157 in the name refers to the position of the stretch within the parent protein. Material used in laboratories is manufactured rather than extracted from stomach fluid.
The molecule carries 15 residues, a molar mass near 1419.5 g/mol, and the formula C62H98N16O22. Its structure features a proline-rich central region, a pair of adjacent aspartic acid residues, and no cysteine. The absence of cysteine means no disulfide bonds can form, which simplifies refolding and reconstitution. Suppliers usually ship the material as a freeze-dried powder that appears white to off-white. It dissolves readily in water and in saline solutions.
Dry powder is generally stored at low temperature, with minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder advised for extended retention. Reconstituted solutions are less stable than the solid form and are normally kept cold and shielded from repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Light exposure is avoided because some peptides degrade under ultraviolet radiation. The exact rate of degradation depends on concentration, pH, and the presence of salts, so a single shelf life does not apply to every preparation. Reported stability figures should be read as indicative of typical handling rather than as universal constants.
Confirmation of identity and purity relies on standard peptide analysis techniques. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates the peptide from related impurities and serves as the most common purity assay. Mass spectrometry, often coupled to that chromatography step, provides an accurate molecular mass that can be matched against the expected value. Amino acid analysis or sequencing can be added for further confirmation. Because short peptides can be produced by different synthetic routes, laboratories usually report both a chromatographic purity percentage and a mass confirmation rather than a single figure.
BPC-157 is commonly supplied as a lyophilized powder, a freeze-dried solid that is reconstituted before use in laboratory work. As a short peptide, it dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffer solutions, and stock solutions are typically prepared in water or a mild buffer. The chain contains several proline and acidic residues, which influence how it behaves in solution. Because the solid can take up moisture, weighing and handling are usually performed under low-humidity conditions. Its solubility class is described as freely soluble in water rather than requiring an organic solvent.
Problems with mRNA stability have been identified in viral genomes, cancer cells, and various diseases. Research shows that many of these problems arise because of faulty ARE function. Deficiency of the ZFP36 family show that ZFP36 ARE binding proteins are critical regulators of T cell homeostasis and autoimmunity. Deficient mice have also indicated a protective role for ZFP36 ARE binding proteins via regulating cytokine levels in the thymic microenvironment, thereby preventing thymic involution. Additional potential problems have been listed below:
The formation of chain structures has a direct impact on the overall strength of the whole polymer; the longer a chain is, the more differing the effects amylopectin will have on starch's morphology. Packing of chains, inter block chain length (IB-CL), also correlates with the gelatinization temperature of starch granules. In tandem, the IB-CL will increase as the length of B chains increases, meaning that as the length of individual B chains increases, so does the blocks between connections with other chains. Finally, in general, the more densely packed the resulting molecule of amylopectin, the higher the strength of the starch gel as a whole unit. Starch utilizes the density-strength correlation of amylopectin as a measure of forming dense, strong bricks as a basis for the final starch configuration. Amylopectin in starch is formed into helices to compose hexagonal structures that will subsequently be differentiated into A (cereal) and B (high-amylose; tubular) type starch. Structurally, A is more compact, while B is looser, hence the higher concentration of amylose.
Alpha decay energy follows the same trend as for other heavy elements. The lighter astatine isotopes have quite high decay energies, which become lower as more neutrons are added, reaching a minimum at 125 neutrons (astatine-210), even though 126 (astatine-211) is the magic number. The decay energies increase much more steeply, though, on the next two steps, reaching a high at 128 neutrons where the alpha-decay product would have the magic number of 126. Here this is astatine-213, releasing the highest energy and having the shortest life (125 ns) of all the isotopes. The energy then declines again, and alpha lifetimes increase quickly, no long-lived astatine isotope exists; this happens due to the increasing role of beta decay. This decay mode is especially important for astatine: as early as 1950, it was postulated that the element has no beta-stable isotopes (i.e. ones that do not undergo beta decay at all), though nuclear mass measurements reveal that 215At is in fact beta-stable, as it has the lowest mass of all isobars with A = 215. A beta decay mode has been found for all other astatine isotopes except for 212-216At and their isomers. Among other isotopes, if they do not undergo alpha decay: astatine-210 and the lighter isotopes decay by electron capture or positron emission, 211 by electron capture only, and astatine-217 and heavier isotopes undergo β- decay. Astatine-212, 214, and 216 should be able to decay either way.
Rosiglitazone (Avandia): the European Medicines Agency recommended in September 2010 that it be suspended from the EU market due to elevated cardiovascular risks. Pioglitazone (Actos): remains on the market but has also been associated with increased cardiovascular risks. Troglitazone (Rezulin): used in 1990s, withdrawn due to hepatitis and liver damage risk. Multiple retrospective studies have resulted in a concern about rosiglitazone's safety, although it is established that the group, as a whole, has beneficial effects on diabetes. The greatest concern is an increase in the number of severe cardiac events in patients taking it. The ADOPT study showed that initial therapy with drugs of this type may prevent the progression of disease, as did the DREAM trial. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), which provides clinical practice guidelines for management of diabetes, retains thiazolidinediones as recommended first, second, or third line agents for type 2 diabetes mellitus, as of their 2019 executive summary, over sulfonylureas and α-glucosidase inhibitors. However, they are less preferred than GLP-1 agonists or SGLT2 inhibitors, especially in patients with cardiovascular disease (which liraglutide, empagliflozin, and canagliflozin are all FDA approved to treat). Concerns about the safety of rosiglitazone arose when a retrospective meta-analysis was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

=== Conservation === Stem cells are being explored for use in conservation efforts. Spermatogonial stem cells have been harvested from a rat and placed into a mouse host and fully mature sperm were produced with the ability to produce viable offspring. Currently research is underway to find suitable hosts for the introduction of donor spermatogonial stem cells. If this becomes a viable option for conservationists, sperm can be produced from high genetic quality individuals who die before reaching sexual maturity, preserving a line that would otherwise be lost.
=== Damage === Over 40% of French grape vines and vineyards were devastated over a 15-year period from the late 1850s to the mid-1870s. The French economy was badly hit by the blight: many businesses were lost, and wages in the wine industry were cut to less than half. There was also a noticeable trend of migration to places such as Algiers and America. The production of cheap raisins and sugar wines caused the domestic industry several problems that threatened to persist even after the blight itself. The damage to the French economy is estimated to have been slightly over 10 million Francs.
=== Human Diseases and Gene Mutations === Greenspan has conducted various research projects directly on the molecular bases of human diseases. A collaborative study with a group at Jefferson Medical College showed mutations in the COL7A1 gene, for type VII collagen, to be the basis of the disabling and fatal skin disease dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa These studies also led to elucidation of the complete intron-exon structure of COL7A1 which at the time had more exons than any previously described gene. His lab was the first to clone and characterize the α1 chain of type V collagen and was also key in the first demonstration that mutations in a type V collagen gene can cause the heritable connective tissue disorder classic Ehers-Danlos syndrome. Accompanying and following these studies, the Greenspan lab has performed studies on collagen V genes and on the biosynthesis of type V collagen and on the molecular mechanisms whereby mutations in type V collagen result in defects in mammalian tissues. Their studies have also shown autoimmunity against type V collagen to be involved in organ transplant rejection and atherosclerosis, and that induction of immune tolerance to type V collagen can help ameliorate atherosclerosis. The Greenspan lab was also the first to clone and characterize the α3 chain of type V collagen and showed the α3(V) chain to be important to the functioning of certain highly specialized cell types and to be important to tumor growth and survival times in breast cancer.

Because radon is quite electropositive for a noble gas, it is possible that radon fluorides actually take on highly fluorine-bridged structures and are not volatile. Extrapolation down the noble gas group would suggest also the possible existence of RnO, RnO2, and RnOF4, as well as the first chemically stable noble gas chlorides RnCl2 and RnCl4, but none of these have yet been found. Radon carbonyl (RnCO) has been predicted to be stable and to have a linear molecular geometry. The molecules Rn2 and RnXe were found to be significantly stabilized by spin-orbit coupling. Radon caged inside a fullerene has been proposed as a drug for tumors. Despite the existence of Xe(VIII), no Rn(VIII) compounds have been claimed to exist; RnF8 should be highly unstable chemically (XeF8 is thermodynamically unstable). Radon reacts with the liquid halogen fluorides ClF, ClF3, ClF5, BrF3, BrF5, and IF7 to form RnF2. In halogen fluoride solution, radon is nonvolatile and exists as the RnF+ and Rn2+ cations; addition of fluoride anions results in the formation of the complexes RnF3− and RnF42−, paralleling the chemistry of beryllium(II) and aluminium(III). The standard electrode potential of the Rn2+/Rn couple has been estimated as +2.0 V, although there is no evidence for the formation of stable radon ions or compounds in aqueous solution.
Ion channels receptors are large transmembrane proteins with a ligand activated gate function. When these receptors are activated, they may allow or block passage of specific ions across the cell membrane. Most receptors activated by physical stimuli such as pressure or temperature belongs to this category. G-protein receptors are multimeric proteins embedded within the plasma membrane. These receptors have extracellular, trans-membrane and intracellular domains. The extracellular domain is responsible for the interaction with a specific ligand. The intracellular domain is responsible for the initiation of a cascade of chemical reactions which ultimately triggers the specific cellular function controlled by the receptor. Enzyme-linked receptors are transmembrane proteins with an extracellular domain responsible for binding a specific ligand and an intracellular domain with enzymatic or catalytic activity. Upon activation the enzymatic portion is responsible for promoting specific intracellular chemical reactions. Intracellular receptors have a different mechanism of action. They usually bind to lipid soluble ligands that diffuse passively through the plasma membrane such as steroid hormones. These ligands bind to specific cytoplasmic transporters that shuttle the hormone-transporter complex inside the nucleus where specific genes are activated and the synthesis of specific proteins is promoted. The effector component of the signaling pathway begins with signal transduction.
In 1999, National Semiconductor also put out feelers for selling if not the whole, then a majority stake of, its fabrication plant in South Portland, Maine. However, that did not come to fruition. On June 28, 2000, National Semiconductor and TSMC Taiwan signed an agreement that would allow transfer of advanced fabrication technologies from TSMC to the National Semiconductor fabrication plant in South Portland, Maine. On March 11, 2009, National announced plans to close its assembly and test plant in Suzhou, China, and its wafer fabrication plant in Arlington, Texas. On October 9, 2009, Brian Halla announced his retirement as National's CEO. He remains executive chairman. The company promoted Donald (Don) Macleod, who had previously served as the company's president and chief operating officer, to CEO.

=== Marxist criticisms === Adorno posits social totality as an automatic system. According to Horst Müller's Kritik der kritischen Theorie ("Critique of Critical Theory"), this assumption is consistent with Adorno's idea of society as a self-regulating system, from which one must escape (but from which nobody can escape). For him, it was existent but inhuman. Müller argues against the existence of such a system and claims that critical theory provides no practical solution for societal change. He concludes that Jürgen Habermas, in particular, and the Frankfurt School in general, misconstrue Marx.

It is not approved for human use in the United States or the European Union. Clinical material has been studied in a small number of early trials, mainly for inflammatory bowel conditions, and the compound remains investigational. Regulators treat marketed products as unapproved rather than as authorized drugs.
The peptide was named after a protein fraction found in human gastric juice, and the shorter form was called body protection compound. That phrase was shortened to the abbreviation BPC. The number 157 refers to a laboratory designation used in the original isolation work.
Its sequence corresponds to a segment of a protein present in gastric secretions, but the material supplied for research is made synthetically. No commercial product is purified from human or animal tissue. The synthetic route is used because it gives a defined chain length and a reproducible sequence.
The standard approach is reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, reported as a percentage of total peak area. Because that figure alone says little about the nature of the impurities, the accompanying chromatogram is normally the more useful document for judging a batch.
