Direct human evidence is scarce. One trial in ulcerative colitis delivered the compound by enema and produced limited publicly reported results without a clear benefit. The compound is not an approved medicine in most jurisdictions. In many markets it is sold as a research chemical; in others it falls under prescription or controlled categories. Regulators have not confirmed any claimed medical use, and product labels rarely undergo premarket review.
Most published reports describe experiments in rodents rather than in people. These studies examine outcomes in tendons, ligaments, bone, stomach lining, and intestinal tissue. In rat and mouse models, a frequently reported effect is faster healing or reduced damage. Sample sizes are usually small, and a substantial share of the work originates from a small number of research groups. Independent replication is limited, so how far the findings extend to humans remains an open question.
The sequence places several glycine and proline residues near the middle, which may influence how the chain folds in solution. The peptide is linear rather than cyclic, and it carries no disulfide bridges. Commercial material is commonly supplied as the acetate salt, although the free base and other counterion forms also appear. Because the term BPC-157 refers to a specific sequence, samples with slight sequence variants are chemically different substances. Published work generally treats the fifteen-residue sequence as the defining structure.
Physical descriptions in supplier documents and papers usually list the compound as a white to off-white powder. It dissolves readily in water and in common aqueous buffers, and solutions are often prepared fresh before an experiment. Molecular mass near 1419 daltons helps verify identity during mass spectrometry. The powder is somewhat hygroscopic, so moisture exposure can alter the measured mass of a sample. Purity is typically reported as a percentage from chromatographic analysis.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main study model | Rodents, rats and mice | Underpins most of the published data |
| Common routes in studies | Subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, oral | Varies with the experimental design |
| Common analytical method | Reversed-phase HPLC, LC-MS | Used for identity and purity checks |
| Human evidence base | Small | Few trials reported, with limited findings |
| Regulatory status | Varies by jurisdiction | Not an approved medicine in most places |
Identity and purity are usually assessed with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often paired with mass spectrometry using electrospray or MALDI ionisation. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping by enzymatic digestion provide additional sequence-level confirmation. Purity is commonly reported as an area percentage from a chromatographic trace, and water content can be measured by Karl Fischer titration. Reported masses may differ by tens of daltons between sources because preparations can contain acetate or trifluoroacetate counterions, and such differences are not by themselves evidence of a different peptide.
BPC-157 is normally distributed as a lyophilised powder that ranges from white to off-white in appearance. The peptide dissolves readily in water, normal saline, and common aqueous buffers, and it is poorly soluble in nonpolar solvents such as hexane or vegetable oils. Lyophilised vials take up moisture if left open, which changes the mass of powder in the container and complicates any later weighing. Because the material is handled in small quantities, static and adhesion to glass or plastic can also cause noticeable losses during transfer.
Early work on this family of molecules examined fractions of human gastric juice, where a larger protein was reported to protect gastrointestinal tissue in animal models. BPC 157 was designed as a shorter, more stable fragment of that protein and then studied on its own. The peptide itself is not a normal dietary component and is not present in the human body in meaningful quantities. Descriptions of its origin therefore refer to the research lineage of a laboratory molecule rather than to an endogenous or nutritional substance.
The sequence contains an unusually high proportion of proline and glycine, which limits regular secondary structure and contributes to solubility in aqueous media. The compound dissolves readily in water and in normal saline. Because it is a peptide, digestive enzymes are expected to break it down if it is swallowed, a consideration that influences the routes of administration used in animal experiments. Detailed conformational data remain limited, and published structural models are largely computational.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide with the sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, corresponding to a partial fragment of a larger protein detected in human gastric juice. The name derives from the parent protein designation BPC, an abbreviation of body protection compound, with 157 acting as a fraction or batch identifier used by the original investigators. Its molecular weight is approximately 1419 daltons, and the chain contains no unusual residues or disulfide bridges. In the literature it is described as a short, water-soluble fragment rather than a complete natural protein.
Most early work on this peptide originated in the 1990s from a research group in Zagreb, Croatia, relying on animal models and cell cultures. Reported observations included effects on gastrointestinal lesion healing, tendon fibroblast migration, and blood vessel formation under controlled laboratory conditions. These findings come predominantly from rodent studies and in vitro assays rather than from human trials. Controlled human data remain limited, and the degree to which animal results translate to human physiology is an open question rather than a settled fact.
Human data are far more limited than animal data. A small number of clinical reports exist, generally with few participants and without the randomization or blinding expected in later-phase trials. No large, independently replicated human trial has appeared in the indexed peer-reviewed literature. Statements about effects in people therefore rest on extrapolation from animal work rather than on direct evidence, and the strength of that extrapolation remains an open question rather than a settled matter.
Proposed mechanisms include interaction with the nitric oxide system, modulation of growth factor signaling, and effects on blood vessel formation. None of these has been established as the primary mode of action, and some proposed pathways rest on indirect measurements. Whether the reported effects depend on a specific receptor has not been determined. Stability in gastric acid, unusual for a peptide of this size, is also reported in animal work, but the reason for it is not firmly established.
Published studies on BPC-157 are dominated by animal models. Commonly used endpoints include healing of surgically induced lesions in the stomach, tendon-to-bone attachment after transection, and recovery from experimentally induced vascular or intestinal damage. Many of these reports come from a small number of research groups, and the peptide is often described as acting across a wide range of tissue types. That breadth is itself a point of discussion, since one molecule influencing many unrelated systems is unusual.
=== Career === After receiving his doctorate, Gish worked as an assistant research associate at Berkeley, and as an assistant professor at Cornell University Medical College for eighteen years, joining the Upjohn Company as a research associate in 1960.
The extracellular matrix of granulation tissue is created and modified by fibroblasts. Initially, it consists of a network of type-III collagen, a weaker form of the structural protein that can be produced rapidly. This is later replaced by the stronger, long-stranded type-I collagen, as evidenced in scar tissue.
==== Mechanism of action ==== Propranolol is a non-selective beta receptor antagonist. This means that it does not have preference to β1 or β2 receptors. It competes with sympathomimetic neurotransmitters for binding to receptors, which inhibits sympathetic stimulation of the heart. Blockage of neurotransmitter binding to β1 receptors on cardiac myocytes inhibits activation of adenylate cyclase, which in turn inhibits cAMP synthesis leading to reduced Protein kinase A (PKA) activation. This results in less calcium influx to cardiac myocytes through voltage-gated L-type calcium channels, meaning there is a decreased sympathetic effect on cardiac cells, resulting in antihypertensive effects including reduced heart rate and lower arterial blood pressure. Blocking neurotransmitter activity at β2 receptors in vascular smooth muscle cells causes vasoconstriction, leading to hypertension.
==== Limitation on overall itemized deductions ==== Itemized deductions are reduced by 2/37 of the lesser of the amount of the itemized tax deductions or the taxable income that is within the 37%-rate marginal tax bracket. As an exception, the qualified business income deduction under 26 U.S.C. § 199A is not subject to the limitation.

==== Excretion ==== The plasma half-life of HB in man is estimated at 222±54 min. The clearance of HB differs between the two enantiomers and the age of the human subject. The clearance of the R(-) enantiomer is almost 10-fold greater than the clearance of the S(+) enantiomer. Clearance on average in elderly people, compared to young subjects, is slower. Excretion is mainly via urine, for the three major metabolites. The cyclohexenone glutathione adduct is excreted in the bile.

3 spot in Entrepreneur magazine's 31st Annual Franchise 500, "the first and most comprehensive ranking in the world". This was the 17th year 7-Eleven was named in the top 10. In February 2010, 7-Eleven opened a concept store in DeLand, Florida, across from Stetson University, designed to meet LEED environmental standards. In 2017 they bought 1,110 C-Stores convenience stores from Sunoco in a deal valued at $3.3 billion and in 2024 acquired 204 Stripes convenience stores from Sunoco in a deal valued at $1 billion and finished integrating them in 2026. By 2015, 7-Eleven had over 55,000 stores across the world. In 2020, 7-Eleven announced it would purchase Speedway, 23,000 stores, for $21 billion. In 2021, 7-Eleven rolled out a $70 million ad campaign, their largest investment in advertising in years, doubling their market spending from the previous year. The commercials, directed by Harmony Korine, were to reflect the "evolution" of the chain's store format, drawing attention to, in part, the fact that "this isn't just gas station food, there's real restaurant quality food at 7-Eleven", according to CMO Marissa Jarrantt. On August 19, 2024, it was reported that Alimentation Couche-Tard—owner of competitor Circle K—had made a buyout offer for Seven & i Holdings. Later, on September 6, 2024, Seven & i Holdings rejected this offer as too low and rife with regulatory risk, although a "sweetened offer" might be considered. In October, a revised bid of $47 billion, 22% increase of the previous one, was presented.
In 1917, before the revolution, health conditions were significantly behind those of developed countries. As Lenin later noted, "Either the lice will defeat socialism, or socialism will defeat the lice". The Soviet health care system was conceived by the People's Commissariat for Health in 1918. Under the Semashko model, health care was to be controlled by the state and would be provided to its citizens free of charge, a revolutionary concept at the time. Article 42 of the 1977 Soviet Constitution gave all citizens the right to health protection and free access to any health institutions in the USSR. Before Leonid Brezhnev became general secretary, the Soviet healthcare system was held in high esteem by many foreign specialists. This changed, however, from Brezhnev's accession and Mikhail Gorbachev's tenure as leader, during which the health care system was heavily criticized for many basic faults, such as the quality of service and the unevenness in its provision. Minister of Health Yevgeniy Chazov, during the 19th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, while highlighting such successes as having the most doctors and hospitals in the world, recognized the system's areas for improvement and felt that billions of rubles were squandered. After the revolution, life expectancy for all age groups went up. These improvements continued into the 1960s when statistics indicated that the life expectancy briefly surpassed that of the United States; life expectancy started to decline in the 1970s, possibly because of alcohol abuse.
In maggot debridement therapy, sterile, medical-grade larvae of the necrophagous fly Lucilia sericata are used to eliminate necrotic (dead) tissue from non-healing skin and soft-tissue wounds. This is important as dead tissue can facilitate bacterial growth, impede wound healing, and reduce the effectiveness of topical medications. Physicians may administer the fly larvae directly to skin and soft tissue wounds or indirectly within a sealed mesh bag. Larvae then debride the wound by digesting, liquefying and consuming the dead tissue. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have cleared Lucilia sericata larvae for use as a "medical device" in the US to debride several types of wound including pressure ulcers, neuropathic foot ulcers, and nonhealing surgical wounds.

The enzyme UDP-glucose 4-epimerase (EC 5.1.3.2), also known as UDP-galactose 4-epimerase or GALE, is a homodimeric epimerase found in bacterial, fungal, plant, and mammalian cells. This enzyme performs the final step in the Leloir pathway of galactose metabolism, catalyzing the reversible conversion of UDP-galactose to UDP-glucose. GALE tightly binds nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), a co-factor required for catalytic activity. Additionally, human and some bacterial GALE isoforms reversibly catalyze the formation of UDP-N-acetylgalactosamine (UDP-GalNAc) from UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc) in the presence of NAD+, an initial step in glycoprotein or glycolipid synthesis.
SUMOylation is reversible and is removed from targets by specific SUMO proteases. In budding yeast, the Ulp1 SUMO protease is found bound at the nuclear pore, whereas Ulp2 is nucleoplasmic. The distinct subnuclear localisation of deSUMOylating enzymes is conserved in higher eukaryotes.
=== Coarse-graining and reduced representations === At the other end of the detail scale are coarse-grained and lattice models. Instead of explicitly representing every atom of the system, one uses "pseudo-atoms" to represent groups of atoms. MD simulations on very large systems may require such large computer resources that they cannot easily be studied by traditional all-atom methods. Similarly, simulations of processes on long timescales (beyond about 1 microsecond) are prohibitively expensive, because they require so many time steps. In these cases, one can sometimes tackle the problem by using reduced representations, which are also called coarse-grained models. Examples for coarse graining (CG) methods are discontinuous molecular dynamics (CG-DMD) and Go-models. Coarse-graining is done sometimes taking larger pseudo-atoms. Such united atom approximations have been used in MD simulations of biological membranes. Implementation of such approach on systems where electrical properties are of interest can be challenging owing to the difficulty of using a proper charge distribution on the pseudo-atoms. The aliphatic tails of lipids are represented by a few pseudo-atoms by gathering 2 to 4 methylene groups into each pseudo-atom. The parameterization of these very coarse-grained models must be done empirically, by matching the behavior of the model to appropriate experimental data or all-atom simulations. Ideally, these parameters should account for both enthalpic and entropic contributions to free energy in an implicit way.
Another method of possible remediation for CEC is through the use of membrane bioreactors (MBRs) that act through mechanisms of sorption and biodegradation. Membrane bioreactors have shown results on being able to filter out certain solutes and chemicals from wastewater through methods of microfiltration, but due to the extremely small size of CEC, MBRs must rely on other mechanisms in order to ensure the removal of CEC. One mechanism that MBRs use to remove CEC from wastewater is sorption. Sorption of the CEC to sludge deposits in the MBR's system can allow the deposits to sit and be bombarded with water, causing the eventual biodegradation of CEC in the membrane. Sorption of a particular CEC can be even more efficient in the system if the CEC is hydrophobic, causing it to move from the wastewater to the sludge deposits more quickly.

Animal experiments form the bulk of the published record. Rodent models of tendon, ligament, bone, and gut injury are the most common designs. Controlled human trials are rare, which limits confidence in any clinical claim.
They are best described as working hypotheses. Supporting data come mainly from cell cultures and animal tissue, using markers such as growth factors and inflammatory signals. Confirmatory human studies have not been reported.
Status depends on the country. In some places it is treated as a research chemical available without a prescription, while elsewhere it falls under prescription or controlled rules. It holds no general marketing approval as a therapeutic product.
The letters BPC stand for body protection compound. The number 157 refers to a specific fragment designation from early work on gastric proteins. The full name is a label for a synthetic fifteen-amino-acid peptide rather than a naturally isolated drug.
